Ответы на задание №2 «THE MASCOTS»

1. The Olympic mascots - LEOPARD, HARE, POLAR BEAR.

• LEOPARD is the mining rescuer-climber. He lives in krone of a huge tree which grows on the highest rock in the snow-covered mountains of the Caucasus. He is always ready to come to the rescue and more than once saved the village located nearby from avalanches. Leopard is a beautiful snowboarder, it taught this sport of all the friends and neighbours. The Leopard is cheerful. He can't live in loneliness and likes to dance very much.

• HARE is the most active inhabitant of a winter forest. Her friends always are surprised – and as it everything is in time!? After all Hare not only studies in Forest Academy on "perfectly", to help mother with a family small restaurant "Forest dam", but also to participate in various sports competitions. Darling assures the friends that she has no secret: simply she loves sports very much. And still she likes to sing and dance.

• POLAR BEAR lives behind the Polar circle. In his house all is made of ice and snow: snow shower, bed, computer and even sports exercise machines. The White Bear was brought up by polar explorers since early childhood. They taught him to ski, run on the skates and to play curling. But most of all White Bear liked to ride a sports sledge. He became the real tobogganer and the bobsledder.

• THE FIRE BOY and THE SNOW GIRL come from different planets. The Fire Boy comes from a planet where it's always hot, while the Snow girl came to earth on an icy comet. She looks like a snowflake, while he has hair that looks like fire.

1. CURLING is known that curling originated in Scotland in the early XVI century, the actual evidence for the existence of this sports game is curling sports equipment (stone), the surface of which is stamped date of manufacture - 1511, found at the bottom of a dried lake Danbai. The first historical mention of curling found in medieval monastery books, dated 1541 year, preserved in the Abbey of Paisley, Scotland. Around the same time (1565) there are two paintings by Pieter Bruegel, which depicted the Dutch farmers who play curling - a game that is close to curling on the frozen lake. Curiously, that Scotland and the Netherlands in the XVI century had a very strong commercial and cultural ties. Curling is a sport played on ice. It is played by sliding granite stones, also called rocks or stones, towards a bullseye, called a house, marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, and a team can score points by getting its rocks closer to the center of the house than its opponent's nearest stone. The teams play games that are separated by periods, called ends, and at the end of the game, the team with most points wins.

2. The Olympic Games in Sochi will be holding events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports:

Biathlon, Bobsleigh and Skeleton, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge Skating (Figure Skating, Short Track), Speed Skating and Speed Skating Skiing (Alpine, Cross Country, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Freestyle and Snowboard). In Sochi in 2014, twelve new events are included on the Olympic programme. The new events are: ski slopestyle (men and women); ski halfpipe (men and women); snowboard slopestyle (men and women);snowboard parallel special slalom (men and women); women's ski jumping; biathlon mixed relay; figure skating team event; luge team relay.

2. The new winter discipline: SNOWMAN MAKING(snow снег,man человек,make делать). Sportsmen will have time limit and they will have to obey certain rules: a snowman should have a body of three snow circles,a carrot instead of a nose, a basket instead of a hat. It should have sticks instead  of arms and a broomstick in its arms. A sportsman can decorate the snowman using some extra materials. The main characteristics are speed and beauty. The most beautiful snowman wins the first prize!
