1. AN UMBRELLA is a device which protects people against the rain or sun. First umbrellas were intended as the protection from the sun, not the rain. An umbrella was used as a shelter from the rain by Englishman, Jonas Henvey in 1750.
2. DANIEL DEFOE "ROBINSON CRUSOE”
Daniel Defoe (about 1660 - 1731) was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer, now most famous for his novel "Robinson Crusoe”. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various. "Robinson Crusoe” is a fictional autobiography of the title character. Crusoe leaves the safety of his comfortable middle-class home in England and goes to sea. He is shipwrecked and becomes a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad. He meets cannibals, captives and mutineers, and is eventually rescued.
One of the most famous umbrellas in literature is the one made by Robinson Crusoe.
"I covered it with skins, the hair upwards, so that it cast off the rain like a pent-house, and kept off the sun so effectually that I could walk out in the hottest of the weather with greater advantage than I could before in the coolest, and when I had no need of it, I could close it, and carry it under my arm”.

1. American sweet dessert - WAFFLES. But they differ from our crispy waffles. They are small "browns", which is prepared in a special double pan (waffle) and have a distinct "pattern" honeycombs. Their specialty baked from dough cooked on slaked soda, while in other countries the recipes used in yeast dough. American waffles differ from their foreign "sisters" and externally: they are thin, square shape. In America, there is a chain of restaurants called "Waffle House» (Waffle House): the first one opened in 1955.
The Americans celebrate two holidays in honor of this sweet dessert:
THE NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY – ON AUGUST, 24TH and THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WAFFLE – ON MARCH, 25TH.
2. THERE ARE SOME HOLIDAYS IN RUSSIA WHICH ARE CONNECTED WITH SOME KINDS OF MEALS:
1) MASLENITSA The most characteristic food is blini (pancakes). Round and golden, they are made of butter, eggs and milk.
2) EASTER is the oldest Christian holiday. Russian Easter foods include kulich, paskha, eggs.
3) SAVIOR OF THE APPLE FEAST DAY The holiday has a pre-Christian origin and is associated with harvesting of ripe fruits, especially apples. The others are: honey savior and nut savior.
4) THE NEW YEAR holidays are always connected with hope, fun, tangerines and olivie (a salad with potatoes, carrots, peas and eggs). Every housewife has her secret ingredient for it.
5) AN ORTHODOX CHRISTMAS
People visit their relatives on this day carrying rice pudding with raisins, which is called "kutya”.
